Head Check

In an attempt to avoid unnecessary treatments, we recommend checking heads prior to any treatment process. Every child and all members of the household should have their head and hair checked to determine if lice or nits are present.

Treatment

If lice or nits are found, safe non-toxic products are applied and we utilize a strand by strand technique that ensures every hair has been examined and all evidence of head lice have been removed. This method allows for the individual to be treated effectively one time and then monitored.

Education and Prevention

Head Lice is not an issue of cleanliness and they do not discriminate from clean or dirty hair. We provide education on transmission, how to clean your environment and overall prevention for the future.

While anyone can get head lice, they are most prevalent in school-aged children. Infestations are more common in girls than boys, likely due to longer hair and closer head contact.

There are also increasing reports of resistance to common over-the-counter lice treatments, particularly those containing pyrethroids. Allowing a certified professional to check and treat will provide ease of mind and help prevent future infestations quickly.

What You Need To Know

Frequently Asked Questions & Educational Info

Head lice are tiny (about the size of a sesame seed), wingless insects that live on the scalp and feed on human blood. They are a common nuisance, particularly among school-aged children. They can vary in color from grayish white to reddish brown. The nits (eggs) are commonly found at the nape of the neck and in the hair behind the ears. They are stuck to the hair shaft and will not flake off when touched. The nits are cemented to the hair shaft close to the scalp.

Head lice are primarily spread through direct head-to-head contact with an infested person. They can also be transferred through sharing personal items like hats, brushes, or pillows, although this is less likely.

Head lice is not a cleanliness issue. Head lice actually prefer clean hair, as lice glue their eggs to the hair shaft, clean hair allows for easier attachment.

Common symptoms include itching or a tickling sensation on the scalp, redness or irritation on the scalp, swollen glands, low grade fever, inability to sleep and the presence of small eggs (nits) attached to hair strands close to the scalp.

To check for lice, inspect the scalp and strands for live lice and nits, especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck.

To prevent lice, avoid head-to-head contact, do not share personal items, and regularly check children for lice, especially after known exposures.

No, head lice can’t spread disease. However, if untreated secondary infections can occur due to scratching. They are primarily a nuisance and can cause itching and discomfort.

Adult head lice can live up to 30 days on the scalp, while nits can survive for about 7 to 10 days before hatching. If they fall off the scalp, they typically survive up to 24 hours.

Notify the school so they can take appropriate measures to inform other parents and manage the situation. Treat your child promptly and recheck them regularly to ensure the lice are gone.
